About Pawrora

Pawrora is a small independent site about the end of a pet's life and what comes after it. One person runs it.

Who writes this

My name is Amélie. I built Pawrora and I write what is on it.

It started in a bad few months. My sister lost her dog, and then my mother lost her cat, the two of them inside the same three-month stretch. I watched both of them go looking for answers at two in the morning to questions nobody wants to be asking: whether it was time yet, what the appointment would actually be like, what it would cost, what to do with the collar afterwards. What they found was mostly thin, mostly written to sell something, and mostly not honest about how hard the decision is.

I own a pug, so I already knew I would be on the other side of this eventually. I built the site I wanted the two of them to have found.

How the guides are written

Cost figures come from named published sources, currently the AVMA Veterinary Fee Reference Guide, the NAPHIA Pet Industry Economic Report and the IAOPCC Pet Cemetery and Cremation Industry Survey, adjusted for local cost of living. Where a page uses a source, it cites it at the bottom of that page.

Health and breed information is compiled from veterinary literature and breed registries, with the sources listed on the page.

Grief and memorial writing is mine, informed by watching my family go through it and by reading the pet bereavement literature. It is not clinical advice.

What Pawrora is not

I am not a veterinarian and I am not a grief counsellor. Nothing here has been reviewed by one. If your pet is in distress right now, call your vet or an emergency clinic rather than reading a website.

If you want to talk to a trained person about the loss itself, the pet loss hotlines are free and staffed by people who do this properly.

How the site pays for itself

The memorials, the guides and the tools are free and always will be. Pawrora makes money when someone orders a keepsake, a portrait printed on a canvas, a pillow, an ornament or a candle. That is the whole business model. No page recommends a service provider in exchange for payment, and the provider listings are not paid placements.
